Located in the Northern Peten region of Guatemala, Flores is a bubbling city that uniquely sits on an island on Lake Peten Itza. The town is linked back to the mainland and Santa Elena by a causeway but can also be accessed by water ferry.
Things to do in Flores
Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park sits nearby and is home to historic Mayan ruins native to Guatemala. The park is also home to many migratory birds, towering temples and lush forest, making it a perfect day trip for travellers on the hunt for a little bit of nature.
Back in Flores, the Nuestra Senora de los Remedios cathedral is a beautiful place of worship that also offers great views out over Parque Central Square. There are many local eateries to visit in and around Flores including the restaurants at the Metroplaza Mundo shopping mall. Enjoy a morning of shopping before heading to one of the local street food vendors for a tasty Guatemalan dish.
When you’re on an island, it seems almost inevitable that a boat ride is on the cards. Take a day trip over to San Miguel to enjoy panoramic views back over Flores.
Getting around Flores
Mundo Maya International Airport sits just five-minutes from central Flores and taxis, buses and car hire are all readily available. Boat rides across Lago Peten Itza is also a fun mode of transport when exploring the local area.
