Salmiya is located about 15 kilometres from Kuwait City, which is enough to leave behind the bustling city streets and discover a more relaxed vibe. This intimate city has its share of mosques and cultural sights, along with popular shopping malls and a peaceful waterfront area overlooking Kuwait Bay.
Things to do in Salmiya
Nestled on the waterfront, Scientific Center is one of Samiya’s most-frequented attractions, thanks to its combination of IMAX movies, animal feedings and interactive science games. It’s a great place to take the family and meet penguins, otters, snakes and other animals at the on-site Aquarium, before watching 3D documentaries.
Make sure you spend some time at Dhow Harbour, which houses the only surviving pre-oil Kuwait sailing ship called Fateh Al Khair. The nearby Al Sha’ab Amusement Park features family-friendly rides, an ice-skating rink, arcade games, indoor sports halls, a cinema and coffee shops.
Salmiya is one of Kuwait’s best shopping destinations, home to one of the nation’s first shopping malls, City Centre Mall. Shop along the Salem Al-Mubarak Street shopping districts, located on the city’s outer blocks, to find pearls and gold, as well as world-renowned retail chains. It’s one of the best places to pick up a piece of unique jewellery.
Salmiya’s close proximity to Kuwait City means you’re only a 20-minute drive from notable attractions, including the busy city centre souk, distinct Kuwait Towers and the fascinating Tareq Rajab Museum. If you’re visiting during soccer season, watch the four-time Kuwaiti Premier League champs, Al-Salmiya SC, play at Thamir Stadium.
Getting around Salmiya
You can easily walk around Salmiya from the waterfront right into the city centre. Taxis are always available, while the two major bus operators provide services along with Salmiya routes. Major roads connect Salmiya to other Kuwait cities and provide easy routes for self-drive holidays.
