Officially known as Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden, Ramsau lies in the far south-east of Germany near the border with Austria. It’s famed for its photogenic church and stunning alpine lake, while it’s also on the doorstep of Germany’s third-highest peak, the 2,713-metre-high Watzmann.
Things to do in Ramsau
Ramsau’s most photographed site is St. Sebastian’s Church, a Catholic house of worship set along the banks of the Ramsauer Ache. It’s best viewed from the Malerwinkel or “Painter’s Corner”, which lies on the opposite side of the river and encompasses the jagged peaks of the Reiter Alpe. Coincide your visit with a Sunday service to see the church’s interior or simply stroll through the adjacent cemetery.
South of Ramsau is Berchtesgaden National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that encompasses snow-capped peaks, glaciers and lakes. It’s home to a spectacular network of hiking trails and the 17th-century pilgrimage Church of Saint Bartholomew on the shores of the Königssee. Closer to Ramsau is Wimbachklamm Gorge with its rustic wooden path and cascading falls.
A short drive west of Ramsau is the Hintersee, a crystal clear alpine lake that has long lured painters and photographers. Follow the walking trail that leads through the Enchanted Forest and along a tranquil mountain stream, then continue along the interpretive path detailing the Hintersee’s artistic links. Alternatively, rent a row boat to enjoy the 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains.
Getting around Ramsau
Ramsau is 35 minutes’ drive from Salzburg and Salzburg Airport, which has seasonal flights to destinations across Europe and the Middle East. Munich is around two hours away. Buses connect to Ramsau and the town centre is small enough to explore on foot, although renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the municipality.
