Once an agricultural village, Puchberg am Schneeberg flourished as a nature getaway for the Viennese elite in the late 19th century. It is connected to the 2,076-metre-high peak of the Schneeberg by a historic cog railway, which opened to passengers in 1897.
Things to do in Puchberg am Schneeberg
Automobile fans can visit the Oldtimermuseum Hausberger, which houses an impressive collection of Mercedes 170 models from the pre- to post-war periods. You can get up close to delivery vans, military vehicles and convertibles, as well as beautiful examples of Chryslers and Steyrs. If you’re planning a special occasion, many of their vehicles can be rented with a professional driver behind the wheel.
A short drive west of Puchberg am Schneeberg is the Sebastian Waterfall, a picturesque cascade that tumbles over a series of rocks into an emerald pool. Also nearby is the Myra Falls, which is located in a 600-metre-long limestone ravine and fed by a spring that’s steeped in local legend. A historic hiking trail with 19 bridges accesses the falls.
For elevated views across the Gutenstein Alps and Lake Neusiedl, head to Hohe Wand Nature Park, which is renowned for its rocky cliffs and limestone caves. A network of hiking and climbing trails wind through the park, with one of the most popular leading to the “Skywalk” terrace. Also within the park is a family-friendly petting zoo, a playground and a forested educational trail.
Getting around Puchberg am Schneeberg
Puchberg am Schneeberg is around 30 minutes’ drive from Wiener Neustadt and an hour from Vienna. Vienna International Airport is also an hour away and has flights to destinations across the globe. Regular trains connect to the Puchberg am Schneeberg railway station and the town is compact enough to explore on foot.
