Sprawling on the west bank of the Vltava River, Prague 5 is one of the largest districts in the capital of the Czech Republic. It encompasses the industrial area of Smichov where textiles and railway carriages have historically been made, as well as the neighbourhood of Barrandov, famed for its film production studios.
Things to do in Prague 5
In the west of Prague 5 is the Natural Park Košíře-Motol, a forested area that provides a setting for leisurely walks. You can soak up the views across the region from the 13-metre-high observation tower (the oldest in Prague) or enjoy a swim in the refreshing waters of Pod Dianau Lake.
Movie buffs can get their fix at the Barrandov Film Studios, which is one of the largest production studios in Europe. You can get up close to costumes and props used in “Mission Impossible” and “Casino Royale” at the Filmpoint Expedition and learn about the operation of film equipment. Guided tours of the studio lot can be arranged on request.
Beer lovers can visit the Staropramen Brewery, which was founded in 1869 and is one of the oldest breweries in the Czech Republic. It occupies several historical buildings in the industrial suburb of Smichov, with guided tours including a beer tasting complete with handcrafted Czech glasses. At the on-site gift store, you’ll find shirts and souvenirs bearing the Staropramen label.
Getting around Prague 5
Prague 5 is a 10-minute drive from the centre of Prague and 20 minutes from Vaclav Havel Airport Prague, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Regular trains connect to the Praha-Smichov railway station while Metro line B travels through the district. Buses and trams are also available for getting around Prague 5.
