Olomouc flies under the radar but is one of the most enchanting cities in the Czech Republic. The Old Town is a vision of bubbling fountains and beautiful Baroque architecture. Visit excellent museums, admire centuries-old churches and enjoy the vibrant café culture, nightlife and student scene.
Things to do in Olomouc
The Holy Trinity Column towers over Horni Namesti, the city’s lively main square. The 35-metre-tall column is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest examples of Moravian Baroque architecture in Central Europe. Cafes spill onto the square and provide a perfect vantage point to admire the historic landmark.
Dozens of bubbling fountains dot the Old Town. Three grace the main square, including Baroque-style Caesar’s Fountain. It features the famous Roman statesman mounted on a larger-than-life horse. Neptune’s Fountain is one of the oldest in Olomouc and dates back to the 1600s.
Brush up on more than 1,000 years of history at the Archdiocesan Museum. The museum is housed on the site of Olomouc Castle and preserves many of the stronghold’s original foundations laid in the 11th century. Exhibits chart the evolution of Olomouc over the centuries, from its Romanesque roots to the Gothic, Baroque and Socialist-Realist eras.
The soaring Gothic spires of St Moritz Cathedral soar over Olomouc. The parish church dates to the 15th century and houses an enormous pipe organ. Climb the stone staircase up the bell tower for sweeping views over the city.
Students at the local university keep the city’s bars, pubs and microbreweries thriving. Olomouc is also packed with budget-friendly restaurants where you can enjoy Moravian classics like “paprica” stuffed peppers, “halusky” dumplings and pork roasts. Don’t leave without sampling “tvaruzky” cheese. The ripened cheese originates in Olomouc and tantalises with a creamy texture and pungent aroma.
