Located at the base of the Tatra Mountains, Poronin is a picturesque village in southern Poland. It is located in an area that has long attracted poets, artists and political activists, including Vladimir Lenin who was staying here at the outbreak of World War I.
Poronin serves as a convenient base for exploring the surrounding ski slopes, including the family-friendly SkiSuche. At Rutkow Ski, you’ll find runs to suit all ability levels, accompanied by panoramic views across Zakopane. In the summer months, the mountains provide a recreational paradise for hikers and mountain bikers.
For a cultural fix, head to the typical highlander villa once owned by Jan Kasprowicz, a prominent Polish poet, playwright and critic. In addition to personal memorabilia, period furnishings and books, its rooms exhibit pastel portraits by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. Also on site is a gallery featuring the landscape paintings of Władysław Jarocki Gallery.
Getting there
Poronin is around 20 minutes’ drive from Nowy Targ and 1.5 hours from Krakow and Krakow-Balice International Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Regular buses connect to Poronin and the village is small enough to explore on foot.
