Previously known as Erzsebetfalva, Pesterzsebet is the 20th district of the Hungarian capital, Budapest. It lies in the south of the city and is largely a residential area, with a handful of cultural attractions and green spaces to explore. Pesterzsebet lies on the doorstep of the Soroksar Botanical Garden with its flower-filled meadows and forested hiking trails.
Things to do in District XX - Pesterzsébet
Learn about the people, events and industries that have shaped the district at the Pesterzsebeti Muzeum, which occupies a Neo-Gothic villa that once belonged to local builder, Antal Bocsak. A highlight is the recreated early-20th-century kitchen, complete with local furnishings and ornaments. Temporary exhibitions are also showcased at the museum and there’s a room dedicated to Lili Nemenyi’s acting achievements.
In the north of Pesterzsebet is the Gaal Imre Gallery, which is named after the Hungarian painter. It houses an impressive collection of works by Menyhért Tóth, who spent his last 10 years in Pesterzsebet. Other gallery highlights include sculptural works by Meszlényi János and the “Mother with Child” by Medgyessy Ferenc.
On the southern edge of the district is the Szent Lőrinc Golf Club, which centres around an octagonal-shaped, glass-walled clubhouse. In addition to its 9-hole course, there is an illuminated practice area, two putting greens and a well-equipped driving range. The complex also boasts a huge lake where you can go boating and fishing or refresh with a swim in the summer months.
Getting around District XX - Pesterzsébet
Pesterzsebet is around 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of Budapest and 25 minutes from Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Regular trains connect to the Pesterzsebet railway station while both buses and trams travel throughout the district.
