Established in the late 19th century as the community of “Mark Belt”, Pearland was renamed by Witold von Zychlinski in honour of its abundant pear trees. It has flourished in recent years as one of the fastest-growing cities in the Houston area, with recreational parks, shopping malls and museums among its attractions.
Things to do in Pearland
In the heart of Pearland is Centennial Park, a popular recreational space with a children’s playground, sporting courts and a seasonal splash pad. You can challenge your family and friends on the 9-hole Centennial Park Disc Golf Course or stroll along Mary’s Creek to the Delores Fenwick Nature Center. It’s a great place to learn about the area’s native flora and fauna, with touch tables and interactive exhibits to explore.
For a retail fix, head to Pearland Town Center, a bustling shopping mall anchored by Macy’s, Barnes & Noble and Dick’s Sporting Goods. You can browse the latest fashions at H&M and Daily Thread, shop for home furnishings at Dillard’s or pick up the latest technology at GameStop. When it’s time to eat, choices range from Pei Wei to Gringo’s Tex-Mex and the Louisiana Kitchen.
South of Pearland is Sri Meenakshi Temple, a Hindu house of worship designed in a Dravidian architectural style. It features a whitewashed temple hall dedicated to Ganesh and an engaging visitor’s centre where you can learn about the Hindu culture. South Indian vegetarian cuisine is available at the canteen when colourful peacocks roam free in the on-site sanctuary.
