Things to do in Panadura
Built in the 19th century, Rankoth Viharaya is a beautiful Buddhist shrine anchored by a gleaming white stupa. As you walk through the main entrance, you’re greeted by carved stone elephants. Admire colourful Buddhist murals inside the temple and enjoy a moment of quiet contemplation under the centuries-old Bo Tree.
Panadura Beach is a hidden gem where you can bask on the golden sand and cool off in the Indian Ocean. It’s fringed by swaying palms and is a favourite with local families. Visit in the evening to enjoy the mesmerising sunsets and devour traditional Sri Lankan snacks sold by beach vendors.
Bolgoda Lake is a short stroll from the town centre and is a sanctuary for birds and other wildlife. It’s one of the largest freshwater lakes in Sri Lanka and showcases lush wetlands and mangrove swamps. Relax on the shoreline or rent a kayak and take a leisurely paddle around the lake.
Like all Sri Lankan towns and cities, food is a highlight in Panadura. Dine at local restaurants to enjoy flavour-packed curries made with pumpkin, eggplant, beans and other vegetables. Don’t forget to order steaming bowls of rice and piping hot roti bread.
Getting around Panadura
Panadura is 27 kilometres south of Colombo. The city centre is compact and easy to get around on foot and you can also hail local taxis and auto-rickshaws. Panadura train station is a short walk east of the town and is serviced by the Colombo - Matara line.
