Moratuwa is anchored by Bolgoda Lake, a pristine freshwater reservoir. Stroll along scenic trails and launch a kayak to explore the lush wetland ecosystem. Just north of Moratuwa is the lively coastal resort of Mount Lavinia, where you can bask on the sand, cool off in the Indian Ocean and sip cocktails at beachside cafes.
Set on the banks of Bolgoda Lake, the University of Moratuwa is one of the top higher education institutions in Sri Lanka. Stroll around the leafy campus and sip tea at one of the lively cafes to get a feel for student life.
Food is a highlight in Sri Lanka and Moratuwa is no exception. The neighbourhood is peppered with family-run restaurants where you can enjoy beautifully made curries made from fragrant spices and creamy coconut milk. For breakfast try crispy egg “hoppers” served with sweet onion chutney.
An 18-kilometre bus or taxi ride from Colombo, Moratuwa is a great base for exploring the capital. Visit the serene Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple, admire colonial architecture in the historic Fort District and take a sunset stroll along Galle Face Green. Getting around Moratuwa
Taxis are usually the fastest and most comfortable way to get around Moratuwa, while auto rickshaws are also a convenient way to get from A to B. The district is serviced by local buses and several train stations, including Moratuwa Station, Lunawa Station and Koralawella Station. Bandaranaike International Airport is a 1.5-hour drive north.
