Located in the Cindrel Mountains of Transylvania, Păltiniş is a popular ski resort south-west of Sibiu. It was the first ski resort built in Romania when it was established in 1894 by the Transylvanian Carpathian Society. Many of its early villas are designated as historical monuments.
If you’re visiting between November and April, you can take advantage of Păltiniş’s seven ski trails, which are suitable for snow enthusiasts of all abilities. There are two lifts available for accessing the slopes and beginner lessons are available with the on-site ski school. In the summer months, the area can be explored along a spectacular network of mountain biking trails.
At the entrance to Păltiniş is a Romanian Orthodox monastery where the philosopher Constantin Noica spent the final years of his life and was buried in 1987. It centres around a small wooden church designed in a Neo-Byzantine style and dedicated to the Transfiguration of Our Lady.
