Things to do in Nitra
Nitra is filled with centuries-old castles and churches that date back to 870 AD. Perhaps the most impressive is Nitra Castle, located in the city’s charming old town. At almost 1,000 years old, the structure is a must-see for any visitor.
The Great Seminary and the Diocesan Library is another must-see landmark with classic architecture adorned in pastels, which is unique to Nitra. There’s also the city’s famous Synagogue, which takes a look at Nitra’s Jewish heritage through artefacts, anecdotes and historical images.
Fancy a trip to the theatre? You’re in luck, because Nitra is renowned as Slovakia’s performance art capital. The city is home to two theatres, the Theatre of Andrej Bagar and the Old Theatre of Karol Spišák, with both showcasing modern and traditional Slovakian performances, ranging from musicals and operas to live concerts.
When dinner time rolls around it’s worth sampling the local cuisine, which often surprises with its complexity of flavours. Take a taxi to Sypka u Ludvika, a restaurant just outside the city, for a taste of traditional Slovakian fare. Highlights include baked river fish and slow-cooked wild game from the surrounding countryside.
Getting around Nitra
Nitra is a small city, so you can cover most points of interest on foot. Local buses travel between all of the major sights and taxis are in ample supply. The train and bus stations are located in the heart of Nitra, and it’s possible to catch buses to Poland, Hungary and Bratislava.
