New Buffalo is a laid-back town set on the shores of Lake Michigan. It’s one of several communities in Harbor County, a stretch of the lake fringed by sandy beaches, grass-covered dunes and rolling vineyards. The town is nicknamed the “Hamptons of the Midwest” and combines a carefree lifestyle with a love for art, music and food.
Things to do in New Buffalo
Swim, sunbathe and enjoy the sunshine on New Buffalo Beach. It’s set at the river mouth and patrolled by lifeguards in the busy summer months. Learn to surf on the beginner-friendly waves or rent a paddleboard if you prefer a slower pace. Pick up fish tacos, burgers and Detroit-style pizza from food trucks.
Warren Dunes State Park protects 800 hectares of the Lake Michigan shoreline. Some of the biggest dunes are 80 metres tall and treat you to sweeping views over the lake. Sunbathe on the honey-hued sand and cool off with a dip in Lake Michigan. Winter transforms the park into one of the top cross-country skiing destinations in the state, while you can also sled and snowboard on the powder-covered dunes.
Use New Buffalo as a base to explore the Lake Michigan Shore American Viticultural Area (AVA). Fun and friendly, the region is passionate about small-batch wines and one-of-a-kind vintages. Try full-bodied reds, fruit-forward whites and syrupy ice wines. Join a guided tour to learn more about the “lake effect” that gives the wines their unique characteristics. Sit down for lunch at a winery restaurant or enjoy a picnic on the vineyard grounds.
