Things to do in Manistique
Downtown Manistique has all the charm of a small American town. Browse mom-and-pop shops on Main Street and eat at welcoming cafes, diners and grills. Manistique Boardwalk stretches for more than three kilometres along the Lake Michigan shoreline. You’ll pass by several scenic lookouts and enjoy fabulous views of the cherry-red Breakwater Light. Sunset is a beautiful time to stroll and watch ships cruise past.
Guided tours take you up Seul Choix Point Lighthouse. The historic landmark was built in 1895 to guide ships transporting iron across Lake Michigan. Walk around the scenic grounds and enjoy a picnic on the grass.
Ride a crank-powered wooden raft across Kitch-iti-kipi, a crystalline spring fed by 10,000 gallons of water a minute. You’ll be amazed by the crystalline water of the 12-metre-deep natural pool. The spring flows into nearby Indian Lake, where you can swim, paddle and sunbathe on sandy beaches. The lake is well-stocked with perch, pike, walleye, bass and more.
Step back in time at Fayette Historic State Park. The open-air museum recalls the town’s past as an iron smelting hub. Peer into historic buildings and watch 19th-century cooking and blacksmithing demonstrations. From the white limestone cliffs, you’ll enjoy sweeping views over the lake.
