Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMU) is committed to sparking curiosity, championing diversity and facilitating positive change. The university is underpinned by a famous quote from Nelson Mandela, where the iconic South African leader asserts "education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.
NMU is one of the most prestigious universities in South Africa and offers more than 500 programs across seven faculties. Notable alumni include former Springbok captain, Andre Vos, Afrikaans novelist, Eben Venter, and nano-particle physicist, Nashwa Eassa. You're welcome to peer into the public university buildings or join local students at one of the cafes.
The main campus occupies 830 hectares and is a designated nature reserve. NMU game drives led by university naturalists offer a unique chance to spot antelope, zebra, springbok and caracul. The state-of-the-art Archives & Exhibition Centre showcases everything from palaeontology exhibitions featuring 100,000-year-old artefacts to contemporary art and photography shows.
