Set high above the city, Palacio del Obispado is the crown jewel of Monterrey. Today the handsome Baroque palace houses one of Mexico's best museums, home to a treasure trove of Nuevo Leon artefacts, including weaponry and folk clothing. You can also enjoy sweeping views of the city and surrounding mountains.
Downtown Monterrey is anchored by Macroplaza, a lush neighbourhood dotted with leafy streets and shady squares. It's home to some of the city's best bars and restaurants, including the famous Madre Oaxaca bistro. Macroplaza is also home to the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, which boasts contemporary works from Mexican and Latin American artists.
Stretching for almost 2.5 kilometres, Paseo Santa Lucía is an urban oasis in the heart of Monterrey. The artificial river is fringed with a leafy pathway, bubbling fountains and over 25 bridges. You can stroll along the promenade or enjoy a scenic boat cruise.
Thanks to its setting at the foot of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains, Monterrey is a hub for adventure sports. Just 12 kilometres from downtown Monterrey, Parque Ecologico Chipinque is laced with hiking trails and mountain bike tracks. They wind through emerald forests, jagged peaks and scenic lookouts.
Getting around Monterrey
You can get around Monterrey using taxis or the efficient metro system and local buses. From Macroplaza, the drive to Monterrey International Airport takes around 30 minutes.
