Considered one of the most beautiful islands in Italy, Monte Isola lies in the middle of Lake Iseo in the province of Brescia. Archaeological findings suggest it was inhabited by the Romans before becoming part of the Monastery of San Salvatore in the 10th century. Today, Monte Isola is dotted with picturesque villages, castle remains and a hilltop sanctuary.
Things to do in Monte Isola
In the hamlet of Peschiera Maraglio is the Chiesa Parrocchiale San Michele Arcangelo, a Baroque-style church with Tuscan pilasters and an entrance portal built from Sarnico stone. Frescoes and wood carvings decorate the interior, which features a single nave and a barrel vault. After your visit, you can relax at one of the alfresco cafes overlooking the waters of Lake Iseo.
For sweeping views across Monte Isola, climb the cobbled mule track that leads to the Santuario Madonna della Ceriola. Built in the 15th century, this atmospheric shrine lies at the island’s highest point. Step inside to admire the beautiful frescoes that decorate the interior, together with a wooden statue of the Madonna.
In the north-west corner of Monte Isola is the Torre Rocca Martinengo, a 15th-century fortification originally built by the Oldofredis. After being transformed into a residence by the Martinengo family, it fell into disrepair in the late 17th century. Nearby is the rocky beach of Baia del Silenzio, where you can refresh with a swim in the warmer months.
Getting around Monte Isola
Regular ferries connect Monte Isola to Sale Marasino, from where trains connect to Brescia and Bergamo. Milan Bergamo Airport is around an hour away and has flights to destinations across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Only mopeds and bicycles are allowed on the island, although many of its attractions are accessible on foot.
