Nestled at the southern end of the Great Lake, Miena lies at the heart of Tasmania’s Central Highlands. It’s scattered with holiday shacks and fishing cottages that come to life in the warmer months when trout anglers flock to the area. During the winter months, Miena and the Central Plateau Conservation Area are beautifully blanketed in snow.
Things to do in Miena
Cast a fishing line to lure brown trout in the Great Lake, Penstock Lagoon and Arthurs Lake or head to the waterfront reserve at Little Pine Lagoon, which lies a short drive to the west of Miena. The lagoon was created following the damming of the Little Pine River and is considered one of the best fly-fishing spots in Tasmania. Both shore and boat-based fishing are possible.
At the opposite end of the Great Lake from Miena is an elevated lookout, which offers sweeping views across the Central Highlands. If you continue driving north, you’ll arrive at the Pine Lake Walk, a short boardwalk trail that leads to a beautiful lake framed by pencil pine trees. These ancient trees are among Tasmania’s rarest and are only found in the highlands.
On the eastern edge of Miena is the Miena Dam Lookout, which offers impressive views of the town’s arched dam. It was originally constructed in 1919 to increase the Great Lake’s storage and generate electricity at the Waddamana Power Station. Combine your visit with a stop at the Steppes Homestead, a historic residence surrounded by bronze sculptures by Stephen Walker.
