Hugging the north-east coast of Djerba Island, Midoun is a sprawling settlement just off the coast of Tunisia. It is the largest of the island’s three towns and is framed by beaches lapped by the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to its lively souk, Midoun is renowned for its historic village recreating life in Djerba in times gone by.
Things to do in Midoun
Spend an afternoon wandering through the Midoun souk where you can haggle for locally made handicrafts and souvenirs. Admire the filigree jewellery created by Jewish craftspeople and soak up the sights, sounds and smells of the spice souk. Also nearby is a fish market where the morning catch is for sale.
Don’t miss a visit to the Djerba Explore Park, which encompasses a reconstructed village where you can experience life on the island throughout the centuries. Also within the complex is a traditional olive oil mill and the Lella Hadria Museum with its impressive collection of Maghreb art. Head to the reptile farm at feeding time to watch the resident crocodiles in action.
For a day at the beach, you can relax on Plage Dar Djerba, a long stretch of white sand that overlooks the Gulf of Gabes. If you’re interested in seeing what lies below the water’s surface, embark on a scuba diving excursion with the team at the Abyss Dive Center. Golfers can enjoy a round on one of the three 9-hole courses of the Djerba Golf Club or practise their swing at the driving range.
