Whether you want to live it up in Antalya or explore the remote landscapes of the Lycian Way, the Mediterranean Region is one of Turkey’s most inspiring destinations.
Sightsee in Antalya. Centred around a labyrinthine old town, Antalya is a vibrant resort city and the gateway to Turkey’s Mediterranean Region. It is dotted with Roman remains that include Hadrian’s Gate and the 2nd-century Hidirlik Tower, which offers magnificent views across Antalya’s yacht-filled harbour. For a day on the sand, rent an umbrella and sun lounger on Konyaalti Beach while enjoying views toward the Beydaglar Mountains.
Hike the Lycian Way. Stretching for more than 500 kilometres from Hisarönü to Geyikbayırı, the Lycian Way takes in the magnificent coastline of ancient Lycia. It can be hiked in stages, with highlights of the route including the azure lagoon of Ölüdeniz, the lighthouse of Cape Gelidonya and the aptly named Butterfly Valley.
Explore the cobblestone streets of Kaş. Located atop the site of ancient Antiphellos, Kaş is a charming town along the Lycian Way. Admire the whitewashed historic buildings that line its cobblestone streets, with many occupied by independent boutiques and eclectic cafes. Among Kaş’s ancient ruins are a beautifully preserved theatre and a 4th-century-BC tomb.
Relax in Olympos. Located in a picturesque river valley, Olympos was an ancient Lycian settlement near the modern town of Çıralı. It’s a popular spot for relaxing in the Mediterranean Region, with an attractive sweep of sand and a collection of ruins to explore. Nearby are the perpetually burning gas fires of Yanartaş.
