Time slows down in Magnisia, a tiny village surrounded by olive groves. It’s a stone’s throw from the coast and is a great base for sun-drenched getaways on Crete. Top up your tan on Spilies Beach, a picturesque stretch of pebble sand set between rugged cliffs. Bask in the sunshine, swim in the translucent water and explore hidden sea caves.
Explore Venetian Fortezza Castle in the nearby city of Rethymno. The star-shaped stronghold was built by the Venetians in the 1500s and commands spectacular views over the coast. You’ll be amazed by the soaring walls and enormous bastions. Walk along the breezy ramparts and admire the mosaic-covered ceiling of Sultan Bin Ibrahim Mosque, built during the Ottoman era.
Try mouth-watering local food at tavernas in Magnisia and at nearby resorts. Enjoy creamy sheep’s milk cheeses, lamb served with “stamnagathi” wild chicory and “dakos” diced tomatoes served on crunchy barley rusk bread. Branch out with adventurous dishes like fried snails cooked in olive oil, vinegar and rosemary.
