Things to do in Livadia
If you want to live like a local, you can sit up late and experience the chatter of the Livadeia’s charming cafes. The central square is full of traditional bars where you can sip ouzo with the locals and try classic dishes like a tyropita cheese pie or fresh octopus. Walk to the small river waterfalls in the evening and catch the shimmering lights on the blue waters.
By strolling along Herkyna River, you can see a historic waterwheel and many old houses and bridges that have dominated the town for hundreds of years. Meander through the narrow streets, where you can discover small shops selling local trinkets, hidden from the more central tourist shops.
At Levadia Krias Springs along the river, remnants of marble statues rest just above the water. It was once the spot of the oracle of Trophonius, the god guardian of the city. Now it’s a tranquil natural site below a quaint medieval castle that captures the diverse mythology and history of the land.
Getting around Livadia
Public transport would only disturb the peaceful tranquillity of Livadeia, which is why most people travel around on foot. Buses regularly connect to other major Greek cities, with Athens less than 100 kilometres away. There are also some great biking trails from the centre that journey into the nearby mountains.
