Lefkada Town boasts vivid cottages, charming churches and cobblestone paths extending inland from the harbour and marina. The waterfront is also lined with cafes, bars and seafood eateries. Just outside the village of Nidri, you can take a vineyard tour and sample some of the island’s renowned vintages at Lefkaditiki Gi Winery.
Beaches line the coast, framing aqua waters and secluded coves for snorkelling and swimming. Favourites include Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma, which are all accessible by car or boat. Go windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding and surfing or join a boating excursion with stops at pristine beaches around the island.
Hike from Nidri to reach the spectacular Dimosari Waterfalls, which spill out into a rocky lake perfect for a refreshing dip. Don’t miss exploring the Castle of Agia Mavra, a 14th-century fortress that now houses the fascinating Church of Agia Mavra.
Visit the whitewashed Church of Agios Ioannis, which is perched on a rock and bears the reputation of hosting the Apostle Paul in its original structure back in the 1st century AD. You can browse a rare collection of Byzantine coins and various artefacts reflecting the site’s Biblical importance.
Getting around Lefkada
Buses run between the main island towns, with more frequent services during summer. You can rent cars, scooters and bicycles in Lefkada Town, Nidri and Vasiliki. Vehicles are also available at Aktion National Airport in Preveza, about 40 kilometres away.
