Nestled in a bend of the River Ourthe, La Roche-en-Ardenne is a picturesque city in Belgium's Wallonia region. It is believed to have originally been settled in the Neolithic era before the Romans built a fort here following the conquest of Gaul. Today, La Roche-en-Ardenne is one of the most-visited destinations in the Ardennes.
Things to do in La Roche En Ardenne
Occupying the Château de Clervaux is the Museum of the Battle of the Ardennes, which details the events that took place here during World War II. Original uniforms, documents and weapons help to bring to life the story of the Battle of the Bulge, which saw German troops attack the American line along the Sûre and Our rivers.
Watching over the city is the Château de La Roche-en-Ardenne, a ruined medieval castle originally built in the 9th century and expanded several times since. It offers a fascinating insight into military architecture throughout the ages and includes reinforcements completed by a student of Vauban. From the castle, there are magnificent views across the rooftops of La Roche-en-Ardenne.
Travelling with kids? Be sure to visit Le Parc à Gibier de La Roche, which is home to animals native to the forests of the Ardennes. Follow the easy walking trail that winds its way through the wildlife park to observe fallow deer, wild boars and lynxes. You can say “hello” to the friendly animals at the miniature farm before relaxing on the cafe terrace.
