Surrounded by Parc Naturel Des Deux Ourthes, Houffalize lies at the heart of the picturesque Ardennes in south-east Belgium. It played an important role during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, with British and American generals meeting up here to plan their counter-attack against the Germans.
Things to do in Houffalize
One of Houffalize’s most beautiful buildings is the Eglise Sainte Catherine D’Alexandrie, an early Gothic church that was established in the 13th century as an Augustinian priory. It is renowned for its gilded lectern depicting an eagle with outstretched wings that was crafted in 1370. Elevated views of the church can be enjoyed from the Point de Vue du Vieux Château, which is located on the site of a long-since abandoned castle.
One of the best ways to experience Parc Naturel des Deux Ourthes is on its extensive network of walking trails, which take in moorland, peat bogs, woodlands and pastures. Marvel at the Rock of Herou, which rises to 80 metres above the Ourthe River and offers magnificent panoramas across the unspoiled landscapes of the Ardennes.
Travelling with kids? Visit Houtopia, a family-friendly recreational centre with both indoor and outdoor attractions. You can get hands-on with the interactive exhibits in the multi-sensory museum or let loose in the adventure playground. A highlight of the complex is the netted bridge that spans the Ourthe River, leading to a 30-metre-long slide that returns you to the other side.
