In the town centre, the American Emigrant Museum explores the tight-knit relationship between Norway and the United States. It’s filled with artefacts and memorabilia, including American antiques and artwork. Kids love playing classic American tunes on the working jukebox. The charming village of Liknes is a short stroll up the river and offers a good selection of cafes, restaurants and B&Bs.
Knaben, a historic old mining town in the north of the region, recalls the town’s industrial past. The town is home to the excellent Knaben Mining Museum, where you can learn about a coveted mineral known as “molybdenum” found in the surrounding mountains. Guided tours take you deep into the historic tunnels below the museum.
Mountains, rivers and fjords make Kvinesdal an ideal base for outdoor adventures. Well-marked hiking trails wind through the countryside and take you to scenic plateaus and alpine lakes. Cast a line in the Kvina River for the chance to reel in salmon and sea trout. The exhilarating via ferrata route in Knaben climbs 786 metres above sea level and unlocks spectacular views over the mountains.
The historic village of Feda is one of the most popular destinations in Kvinesdal. It’s set on a postcard-perfect fjord and is dotted with colourful boathouses that add to the town’s charming aesthetic.
Getting around Kvinesdal
Rental cars are an easy way to visit Kvinesdal and explore surrounding sights and attractions at your own pace. The town is a 2.5-hour drive from Stavanger and 5.5 hours from Oslo. Trains run between Stavanger and Storekvina in two hours. From here, it’s a 10-minute taxi ride to Kvinesdal. Stavanger Airport is a two-hour drive away.
