Known as the “Fruit Bowl of Auckland”, Kumeu is located in the Greater Auckland countryside, providing a rich pastoral experience within a few minutes of the Auckland city centre. Wine lovers can visit wineries dating back to the 1940s, while kid-friendly adventure parks and equestrian activities appeal to families.
Things to do in Kumeu
Artisan, boutique and cutting-edge wineries abound in the vineyards of the Kumeu district, producing award-winning Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs. Renowned New Zealand labels, such as Soljan’s Estate, Cooper’s Creek and Kumeu River, open their cellar doors for tasting and touring throughout the year.
An excellent way to enjoy the coastal scenery is with a guided wine tour that includes tastings and samples of regional cuisine. On the Villa Maria Scenic Vineyard Odyssey Wine Tour, you can explore Waitemata Harbour, Mission Bay and Cornwall Park. Lunch is an open menu at the Villa Maria Vineyard Café, followed by wine tasting at Cooper’s Creek.
Travelling with the family? Spend an afternoon at Crystal Mountain where you can pan for crystals and ride the thrilling Gonzales Roller Coaster. Discover fossils, gemstones and meteorites from across the globe in exhibits at the Crystal Mine Museum. A small gift shop offers one-of-a-kind jewellery, crystal ornaments and souvenirs.
Drive about 20 minutes to reach the Wild West Coast Beach of Muriwai, known for its black-iron sand. It stretches for 30 kilometres and is full of water and sand-based activities, such as surfing, fishing, land yachting, kiting and horseback riding. It also hosts the country’s largest gannet colony.
Getting There
Auckland Airport is less than a 30-minute drive away. The North Auckland Line train services Kumeu and surrounding towns, while buses and taxis offer reliable transportation.
