Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, is a bustling city known for its elegant European architecture, including one of India's most beautiful Christian churches. Stroll along the sandy beach, see birds at the wildlife park and devouring sumptuous Keralan cuisine.
Things to do in Kozhikode
While India is famous for its mosques and temples, the Church of South India champions a different style of architecture. It was built by Swiss missionaries in the 19th century and is known for its unique Euro-Keralan design featuring ornate windows and a soaring white tower.
Cool off at Kozhikode Beach, a popular stretch of sand known for its fiery sunsets. The beach is lined with colourful seafood shacks serving up freshly-caught fish and mussels. Stroll down to Dolphins Point to watch the playful marine mammals frolicking in the waves or let the kids explore the beach's playground and mini aquarium.
Don't forget to pack your binoculars when visiting the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, where the Kadalundi River flows into the Arabian Sea. The park stretches across a cluster of low-lying islands and is a haven for migratory seabirds, including terns, sandpipers, plovers and greenshanks.
In addition to tantalising street food, Kozhikode boasts some of Kerala's best eateries. Snag a table at Paragon Restaurant, a local favourite that's been serving sumptuous seafood dishes since 1939. House specialties include fish served in a syrupy tamarind sauce, as well as the legendary chicken biryani.
