Korba is a lively coastal town set on the Cap Bon peninsula fringed by lush wetlands. The town itself has an industrial feel, though outside the centre you’ll find beautiful beaches and great birdwatching areas. Relax by the Mediterranean Sea, try traditional Tunisian dishes and explore a wildlife-rich lagoon home to spoonbills and flamingos.
Things to do in Korba
Cool off in the shallow, crystalline water of Plage de Korba. The beach features a long stretch of soft white sand dotted with thatch-roof umbrellas. As far as urban beaches go, it’s one of the best in Tunisia. Order ice-cold “citronnade” lemonade and refreshing mint tea from the beachfront café.
A strip of sugar-white sand separates Korba Lagoon from the Mediterranean Sea. The lagoon stretches for eight kilometres and is an important habitat for local wildlife. Join a guided tour to explore the wetlands and spot gulls, egrets, storks and spoonbills. Visit in spring to see hundreds of hot-pink flamingos grazing in the shallows.
Try traditional Tunisian dishes at restaurants in Korba. Start your day with “shakshuka” poached eggs baked in a spicy tomato sauce. Dishes like couscous topped with meat stew are great for lunch. Snack on “brik” filo pastry pockets stuffed with fillings like tuna, potatoes and preserved lemon. Strawberry fields dominate the countryside surrounding Korba. You’ll see punnets of the bright-red fruits sold at stalls across town.
Getting around Korba
Parts of Korba are pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot, while other areas are better for taking a taxi. The city is on the eastern side of the Cap Bon peninsula, a 1.5-hour drive from Tunis and Tunis-Carthage International Airport.
