Conveniently sandwiched between Frankfurt International Airport and the Main River, Kelsterbach makes an excellent base for leisure and business travellers to Frankfurt. Although it has town status, Kelsterbach is mostly enveloped by the city of Frankfurt am Main. Being along the water enables easy access to the Hesse region’s other riverside destinations, such as Mainz and Wiesbaden. Good road connections also provide access south to Mannheim and Darmstadt.
There’s not that much to Kelsterbach, and the town’s streets can be crossed on foot in less than 20 minutes. Some sublime villas stand along the river, and a couple of cute churches reflect the town’s history, notably the Neo-baroque Heart of Jesus Christ. Surrounding the town are a number of factories, mostly related to chemical production.
Exit from the Frankfurt International Airport terminal, walk under the highway, and visitors are already in Kelsterbach. One of the airport’s runways was built inside the town’s boundaries, so it’s impossible to be any closer to a departing flight. The town has an S-Bahn station which provides easy access to the centre of Frankfurt am Main. Being so close to both the E3 and E5 highways allows visitors to get out to destinations across the region quickly.
Kelsterbach was once considered to be the place where Europe’s oldest human remains had been unearthed. Dating to the Middle Stone Age, a skull suggested that European life may have stemmed from this spot along the Main River. However, the skull vanished and is now considered to have been a fake.
