Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Jijel is a bustling resort town on the north coast of Algeria. It was originally settled by the Phoenicians and passed through the hands of various empires before being conquered by the Ottoman pirate Hayreddin Barbarossa in the 16th century. Today, Jijel is a major fishing port and an important centre for leather tanning.

In the centre of Jijel is the Kotama Museum, which is named after a tribe that occupied the region in the 9th century. Learn about the city’s tumultuous past under the Carthaginians, Byzantines and Umayyads before being taken by the French in 1664.
Stretching east of Jijel’s Centre Ville is Plage Kotama, a lively beach where you can swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. On the promenade backing the beach are a handful of restaurants and cafes where you can refuel throughout the day.

Come face-to-face with the resident camels and watch the peacocks showing off their colourful feathers before relaxing at the on-site cafe.
