Stretching north of Jaitaran is the Luni River, which is the largest river in the Thar Desert. Originating in the Pushkar Valley, it’s famed for the high salinity of its water and encompasses Jaswant Sagar Dam, which was constructed in 1892 by Maharaja Jaswant Singh. It’s a popular destination for boating and lakeside walks.

Make a day trip from Jaitaran to Jodhpur to see the immense Mehrangarh Fort that perches atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the walled city. Constructed by Rao Jodha in the mid-15th century, it’s elaborately designed with beautiful carvings and houses a museum where centuries-old artefacts are exhibited. Browse the antique weapons, royal palanquins and paintings on display before exploring the blue-hued streets of Jodhpur that sprawl below.
