Big, beautiful and brimming with rich history, Jaipur is one of India's most charismatic cities. Jaipur’s chaotic streets are lined with everything from ancient palaces to concrete apartment blocks and it is considered one of India's best shopping destinations.
Things to do in Jaipur
The City Palace anchors Jaipur and continues to serve as a residence for the former royal family. It sits in the heart of the Old City and is an enchanting mix of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. Inside you'll find a sanctuary of sun-dappled courtyards, lush gardens and ornate buildings.
Set amongst rolling hills, the mighty Amber Fort is Jaipur’s star attraction. It was built in the 16th century and is a vision of honey-hued sandstone and gleaming white marble. Don't miss the mesmerising Chamber of a Thousand Mirrors, said to be lit by the reflection of a single candle.
With its pastel pink facade and elaborate turrets, Hawa Mahal is one of Jaipur's most impressive landmarks. The palace was raised by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799 and designed as a sanctuary for women of the royal household. Today you can admire its beautiful architecture and discover sweeping views over the city.
No trip to Jaipur would be complete without devouring your fair share of local cuisine, from breezy rooftop restaurants to sizzling street food stalls. For one of India's best lassis, head to Lassiwala, a famous shop blending deliciously creamy lassis served in disposable clay cups.
Getting around Jaipur
The most popular way to get around Jaipur is by auto and cycle rickshaws. Jaipur is also serviced by a metro station, with stations dotted across the city. Jaipur International Airport is just outside the city centre, with the drive taking around 20 minutes.
