Things to do in Irvington
Escape the hustle and bustle of Newark in Irvington Park, which features large expanses of lawn framed by red oak, elm and dogwood trees. At the heart of the park is a picturesque pond fed by an artesian well where you can try your hand at model boat sailing. Stretch your legs on the walking paths, enjoy a hit on the tennis courts or let the kids loose on the play equipment.
If you’re visiting in the spring, be sure to explore Branch Brook Park, which is home to more than 5,000 cherry blossom trees representing 18 different varieties. After being used as a training ground during the American Civil War, the park was designed at the turn of the 20th century by the Olmsted Brothers. While wandering through the park, take note of its Beaux-Arts-style bridges and gates envisioned by the Carrere and Hastings architectural firm.
For a cultural fix, head into Newark to see a show at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center or discover the impressive collection of the Newark Museum of Art. In addition to works by legendary American artists such as Mary Cassatt, Georgia O’Keeffe and Hiram Powers, it boasts one of the world’s most celebrated collections of Tibetan art.
