The reigning Hokkaido University is ranked as one of the top universities in Japan, located north of Sapporo Station in downtown Sapporo. The location consists of 180 hectares of green space including farms, forests, and creeks, of which only 12% is dedicated to actual building structures. Campus walking tours are offered in summer which incorporates the renowned Hokkaido University Museum and historic Elm Forest Information Centre. Ancient clusters of gingko trees add a distinctive element of fascination.
The campus can be accessed from the airport via train on the JR Rapid Airport Line or by the Chuo Bus/Hokuto Kotsu Bus to Sapporo Station. From Sapporo Station, it is a 7- minute walk or 5- minute taxi ride to the university. Unauthorised vehicles are not allowed on campus.
Hokkaido University began as Sapporo Agricultural College in 1876 and became one of nine Imperial Universities after 1918. It received its official title in 1947 and became incorporated in 2004 under encompassing national university legislation.
