A small town, Biei is surrounded by a picturesque network of fields backed by dramatic snow-capped mountains. Come to cycle the quiet country lanes, drink tea in little local cafes and soak in the healing waters of its thermal springs.
Things to do in Biei
The most famous sight in Biei is the supernatural-looking Blue Pond, which can be a variety of shades from pale blue to bright turquoise, thanks to the natural minerals in the water. The nearby Shirahige waterfall is also worth a trip for the view from the bridge and is particularly spectacular when it freezes in winter.
Biei is well-known in Japan for its colourful patchwork hills. The various shades of green and yellow from different crops are enhanced by bright fields of lavender, sunflower and poppy. Visit the flower gardens of Shikisai-no-oka in spring for the most vivid scenes or go in winter to try your hand at sledding or snow rafting.
Need a break from the great outdoors? Biei is home to several hot springs, where you can take your pick of spas and onsens. Have a soothing dip in an outdoor bath with impressive views of the surrounding woods or get pampered with a relaxing massage.
