Gstadt am Chiemsee is a picturesque town nestled at the foot of the Bavarian Alps. It’s set on the banks of Chiemsee, an enormous glacier-carved lake. It’s nicknamed the “Bavarian Sea” and is one of the most beautiful swimming lakes in Germany. Hofanger Nature Park is set on the waterfront and boasts beautiful views over the lake and Bavarian Alps. Walk through the flower-filled gardens, enjoy a picnic on the grass and sunbathe on the sandy beach.
Scenic cruises are a great way to enjoy the lake and visit nearby islands like Fraueninsel and Herreninsel. The latter is home to a magnificent palace built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the “fairy-tale king”. It was inspired by the Palace of Versailles and features lavish state rooms and a glittering mirrored hall. Stroll through the formal gardens or climb aboard a horse-drawn carriage.
Reliable snowfall keeps Gstadt am Chiemsee busy in the winter months. Ski and snowboard at nearby resorts and ice skate on the lake. Family-friendly activities like cross-country skiing and sledding are also on offer.
