Grand Canyon Village is a gateway to one of the world's most iconic natural wonders. It's perched on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and offers easy access to dozens of spectacular lookout points, including Mather Point. At more than 2,000 metres above sea level, it commands sweeping views of the canyon's colourful layered rock bands.
Ranger-led talks offer an in-depth introduction to the Grand Canyon and its unique geology and ecosystem. Adventurous travellers can descend into the canyon, where a layer of ancient Vishnu Schist rock is dated at around two billion years old.
Grand Canyon Village is a popular jumping point for scenic helicopter flights and horseback riding adventures. Colourful souvenir shops sell Grand Canyon keepsakes and American Indian crafts, while quaint cafes and restaurants offer food and refreshments.
Getting there
Grand Canyon Village is perched on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, a 1.5-hour drive from Flagstaff and 3.5 hours from Phoenix. Ample parking is available near the Visitor Centre, while shuttle buses run to popular viewpoints. You can also ride the historic Grand Canyon Railway from Williams to Grand Canyon Village.
