Nicknamed the “Jambalaya Capital of the World”, Gonzales is a Louisianan city between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. It was originally inhabited by the Houma people before the arrival of French and Spanish settlers in the 18th century. Since 1968, it has been hosting the Jambalaya Festival, dedicated to the beloved Creole-Cajun rice dish.

For a retail fix, head to the Tanger Outlets Gonzales, which is home to discount stores from big-name brands such as COACH, Polo Ralph Lauren and Banana Republic. Travelling with kids? They’ll love running around the Lil Bambinos Playtorium, which is packed with equipment and activities to encourage learning. If you’re visiting in the summertime, they can splash around in the outdoor pool at Jambalaya Park, which is also home to an attractive garden and an off-leash dog area.
Occupying a simple, whitewashed house along the New River is the Tee Joe Gonzales Museum, which preserves the former home of Gonzales’ founding father. It was here that Joseph Stonewall Gonzales once lived, with the businessman serving as the first mayor of the town. In addition to period furnishings and clothing, the museum houses exhibits detailing the struggles of early French and Spanish settlers in the region.
Getting around Gonzales
Gonzales is around 30 minutes' drive from Baton Rouge and 35 minutes from Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, which has flights to destinations across the United States. Long-distance buses connect to Gonzales while renting a car will give you greater freedom to explore the city.
