Things to do in Gjirokastër

Gjirokaster Castle soars over the town and commands panoramic views over the surrounding mountains and countryside. It’s one of the most impressive strongholds in the Balkans and has watched over the town for centuries. Explore the ruins of the ancient castle and visit the fascinating Gjirokaster Museum, which features exhibits on the town’s tumultuous past.
Visit Blue Eye Spring, a natural wonder located in a nearby village. Crystalline water bubbles up from an underground spring and flows into a deep pool surrounded by lush greenery. Trails wind through the surrounding forests and showcase the stunning natural landscapes.
Dine at local eateries and savour traditional Albanian dishes like “tave kosi” lamb baked in yoghurt, “qifqi” rice balls seasoned with herbs and “moussaka” eggplant casserole. Some of the oldest restaurants in Gjirokaster have been operating for more than a century.
