Named after the wild asparagus that used to grow in the sandy areas around the island, Espargos is the capital city of Sal, an island municipality in Cape Verde. Set off the west coast of Africa Espargos is located right in the heart of the isle.
Things to do in Espargos
Espargos is a down to earth city, quite literally as you’ll be hard pressed to find any skyscrapers or shopping malls. Instead, you’ll be surrounded by colourful houses, each charmingly crooked. Spend an afternoon wandering the narrow alleys and explore the quaint local residences.
The modest city boasts only a few restaurants, packed with many African craft shops that are perfect for a bit of souvenir shopping.
For those wanting to explore the island of Sal entirely, you can enjoy a coast to coast tour travelling from the Southwest to the Northeast side of the island and soaking in the views as you go. Alternatively, catamaran and quad biking excursions are available and offer an exhilarating day out.
Back in Espargos, head to the main square to watch the local men play cards under the shade of acacia trees. Afterwards, make your way to the market to try your hand at haggling for fresh fruit.
Getting around Espargos
Esparagos sits just over one-kilometre north of Sal International Airport and buses, mini vans and taxis run regularly up to the city. Once in Esparagos, this small town is walkable, while buses run regularly to the surrounding neighbourhoods for those wanting to explore further.
