Translating to “beautiful view”, Boa Vista is the easternmost island in Cape Verde. Living up to its name, it’s a picturesque area with palm trees, soft sand and turquoise waves, with a low-key atmosphere that will appeal to those looking to unwind.
Things to do in Boa Vista
Estoril Beach is the liveliest area with a handful of bars and restaurants. Santa Monica is further down the coast and is a quiet place to relax in the low season. Take a lesson on how to windsurf, as the conditions on the island are perfect for the sport.
Looking for adventure? The interior of the island offers a completely different kind of beauty, perfect for off-road exploring. You can play Indiana Jones at Praia de Chaves, an abandoned ceramics factory that has been partly obscured by the sand dunes.
When the sun goes down, have a refreshing drink on the waterfront in Sal Rei and listen to the waves breaking, then move on to the hotel nightclubs to dance the night away. There are no chain-stores on Boa Vista, only local shops where you can pick up unique jewelry and beautiful silk dresses.
Getting around Boa Vista
There are international flights from Rabil, a 10-minute drive from the main town of Sal Rei, and there is a weekly ferry from the capital, Praia. Sal Rei is compact enough to walk around, while taxis and cars are best for travelling further afield.
