Eselnita is a tiny commune set on the Danube River and surrounded by forested hillsides. Laid-back hotels and resorts dot the riverbank and treat you to spectacular views over one of Europe’s most famous waterways. Relax on riverside terraces, cool off in crystalline swimming pools and visit one of Europe’s most famous rock sculptures on a scenic river cruise.
Things to do in Eşelniţa
Beautiful waterfront hotels make it easy to relax, unwind and enjoy the scenery in Eselnita. Most hotels feature on-site restaurants, with meals often served on riverside terraces. Enjoy classic Romanian dishes like “sarmale” cabbage rolls, “ciorba de burta” beef tripe soup and “mamaliga” polenta flavoured with sour cream and feta cheese. Wash down your meal with a glass of tuica, a Romanian spirit made from distilled plums.
Carved into the cliffsides in the 1990s, the Rock Sculpture of Decebalus pays tribute to the Dacian king. The 55-metre-high carving watches over the Danube and is best admired by boat. Scenic cruises depart from Eselnita and get you up close with the larger-than-life sculpture.
St. Ana Monastery is an easy day trip from Eselnita. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the small city of Orșova, it was built in the 1930s and commands sweeping views over the Danube. Stroll around the flower-filled gardens and enjoy a moment of quiet contemplation. A well-marked trail leads from Orșova to the monastery and takes around 45 minutes at a leisurely pace.
