El Jadida is a sun-drenched beach town anchored by a 16th-century Portuguese fort criss-crossed with winding streets and encircled by lofty ramparts. You can shop for colourful keepsakes, relax on a sandy beach or tee off at one of Morocco's top golf courses.
Things to do in El Jadida
Cite Portugaise, a Heritage-listed fort built in the 16th century by the Portuguese, is one of the world's finest examples of Renaissance military architecture. You can climb up onto the star-shaped ramparts, get lost in the winding streets and peer into the Gothic-style Church of the Assumption.
Hemmed in by colourful souvenir shops, the Portuguese Cistern is one of El Jadida's most photographed landmarks. The cavernous reservoir is lit by a single shaft of light that illuminates the vaulted ceilings and stone pillars. The floor is often submerged in a shallow pool of water that creates stunning reflections.
For the best views in town, head up to Bastion de L'Ange. The scenic lookout is perched on the ramparts of El Jadida and commands sweeping views over the Atlantic Ocean. Nearby is the ruined synagogue, which is marked by a beautifully carved Star of David.
Spend the day at Mazagan Beach and Golf Resort, which features an 18-hole golf course designed by Gary Player. You can also splurge on treatments at the luxury spa, flirt with Lady Luck in the casino or dine at one of the upmarket restaurants.
Getting around El Jadida
El Jadida is easy to get around on foot, especially around the waterfront and Cite Portugaise. The town is also serviced by local buses and taxis. Flights arrive at Casablanca's Mohammed V International Airport, 100 kilometres south of El Jadida.
