Things to do in Douala
Espace Doual'art celebrates contemporary artists from Cameroon and other African countries. The trendy on-site café is a lovely spot for lunch. Nearby Marché des Fleurs is a great place to buy unique artwork, hand-carved sculptures, colourful beaded jewellery and other souvenirs.
Built in 1936, Douala Cathedral features a handsome Neo Roman façade flanked by twin towers. Step inside to admire the cavernous wooden ceiling. You’re welcome to attend Sunday mass and other services held at the cathedral. La Pagode, a handsome mansion built in the early 1900s, recalls the German colonial era. Also known as the Palace of the Kings Bell, it’s one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
Discover the city’s seafaring roots at the Maritime Museum of Douala. One of the top museums in the country, it occupies a striking building designed to resemble the stern of a ship. Check out exhibits on the colonial shipping trade, maritime maps and the booming fishing industry.
Venture out of the city and take a walk on the wild side in Douala-Edéa National Park. The park straddles the Sanaga River and is home to elephants, crocodiles, antelopes, chimpanzees and other African animals. Guided tours are the best way to visit the park and explore the tropical lowland forest and mangrove landscapes.
Getting around Douala
Shared yellow taxis are a fast and affordable way to get around the city. After dark, it’s best to ride private taxis. In parts of the city, it’s possible to get around on foot. Douala International Airport is a 10-minute drive from the city centre.
