Set on the easter slopes of Mount Cameroon, Buea is a lively university town where you can relax, unwind and enjoy the cool mountain air. Admire colonial-era buildings in the town centre and dig into tasty local food at atmospheric cafes and restaurants. Buea also boasts some of the best hiking in Central Africa, with multiple high-altitude trails to explore.
Things to do in Buea
Over the years, Buea has fallen under the rule of the Germans and the British. Stroll around the town centre to see handsome colonial-era buildings that reflect the rich history and heritage of the Central African town. Visit the University of Buea campus to soak in the lively student scene.
Trekking is one of the main reasons people arrive in Buea. Trails wind up the mountain and take you past rugged rock formations and volcanic craters. Avid hikers can hit the same trail used by athletes in the annual Guiness Mt Cameroon international race, with the 4,095-metre-high summit boasting sweeping views over the countryside.
After a day on the mountain, refuel with dinner at a local restaurant. Save your appetite for classic Cameroon dishes such as chicken kebabs, fried plantains and “njama njama” huckleberry leaf stew. For dessert, indulge in a slice of Cameroon banana cake.
