Considered a symbol of Varna, the Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral is one of the largest religious buildings in Bulgaria. It officially opened in 1886 on the edge of St. Cyril and St. Methodius Square and has sweeping views across the city and the Black Sea from the top of its belfry tower.
Gaze up at the soaring copper domes atop the Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral and admire its stone facade constructed using materials sourced from neighbouring villages. Admire the stained-glass windows inside, which were installed in the 1960s and feature saints Cyril, Methodius, Angelarius and Clement of Ohrid.
Take note of the ornate chandeliers hanging from the ceilings and the impressive murals decorating the narthex. After exploring the interior, ascend 133 stairs to the belfry and soak up panoramic views across Varna’s city centre.
