Backed by the jagged peaks of the Pirin Mountains, Bansko is a popular ski resort with a history that dates back to the Byzantine Empire of the Romans. Today it’s an important tourist hub, serving as a base for both summer and winter-based pursuits exploring the magnificent pine forests and lakes that surround the town.
Things to do in Bansko
Bansko centres around its historic high street, lined with winter sports shops, restaurants and bars boasting spectacular mountain views. Admire the bright murals and Bulgarian Revival architecture of Velyanova House, a former home to artist Velian Ognev, then visit the nearby Holy Trinity Church to witness the frescoes he painted there.
Bansko’s ski tourism is focused on the three areas of Shiligarnika, ChalinValog and Banderishka Poliana that combine to offer 75 kilometres of magnificent, tree-lined slopes. There are also plenty of opportunities for backcountry skiing in the Pirin Mountain range.
If you’re visiting during the summer months, you can go hiking to explore the 200 kilometres of walking trails that traverse Pirin National Park. You can also set off on two wheels to go mountain biking on the well-marked trails, including the circular Ponderosa route.

Getting around Bansko
Bansko is located around two hours’ drive south of the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, with frequent buses making the journey. The town itself is relatively small and easily explored on foot, while a gondola travels from the centre of town up to the ski runs.
