Originally settled in 1847 and named after a local doctor, DeSoto is one of the oldest communities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It experienced rapid growth from the 1970s when it became increasingly multicultural and was recently designated as an “All-American City” for its inclusive civic engagement.
Things to do in DeSoto
One of DeSoto’s most important heritage buildings is Nance Farm, a Victorian-style residence that was built in the 1850s by Otway Bird Nance. It originally featured a Greek Revival facade but had a full-length porch added prior to 1883. In addition to the house and its windmill, the site features a milking barn, a curing shed and a water tank to explore.
DeSoto is home to one of the largest BMX racing facilities in the United States at Metroplex BMX, where you can watch some of the world’s best riders in action. Alternatively, pick up a membership to do a few laps over its dirt mounds on your own. Each year, Metroplex BMX hosts the Texas State Championship qualifiers and a variety of national events.
In the far west of DeSoto is the Windmill Hill Nature Preserve, a 30-hectare green space traversed by hiking trails. Its hilly terrain is blanketed in meadows and woodlands that provide plenty of shade during the hot, summer months. Nearby is the Thorntree Golf Club, which boasts one of the most challenging 18-hole golf courses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
